Poker Facts

Poker Facts
I have to admit it, I love trivia and random facts about anything (no wonder one of my favorite shows is “Who wants to be a Millionaire?”). So, after doing some homework I decided to share with you some of the most interesting poker facts I found out there. I’m posting some familiar facts- which I believe all of us- involved in the poker industry, should know already, but some I betcha didn’t have a clue before reading this… so, enjoy!
- Poker origins (speculations as always!):“Pochspiel” is a German game that most believe had the biggest influence on today’s poker, since it involved bluffing, hand ranking and betting. But the Persian game “As Nas” has been denoted as the true game from which poker derived (five cards dealt from a 20-card pack). The first US poker games date back to the early 1800’s, in the Mississippi River Delta area.
- One of my favorites is this bit of historic trivia about deck of cards: the king of spades represents David, King of Israel; the king of Clubs represents Alexander the Great, King of Macedonia; the king of Hearts is Charlemagne, King of France; and the king of Diamonds is Caesar Augustus, Emperor of Rome.
- As I browsed around, I bumped into exaggerated and more realistic figures. These are the lowest and highest numbers I got for US players who play poker on a regular basis: 40 to 80 million regular players. So, if the US has a population of 309 million, that’d be 1 in 4. That’s a lot! That’s more people than who chew gum!
- Ex-president Richard Nixon played his share of poker, winning $6000 during his first 2 months in the U.S. Navy (WWII); this would be an equivalent of $42,640 in 2004 dollars. With this money he was able to finance his run for U.S. Congress in 1964, which he won.
- And what about Edmond Hoyle? Great grandfather to poker? Not even close! Poker was played as it is today almost 150 years after he died. He used to play whist and wrote a book about it, but people hear the phrase “according to Hoyle” and have made up a story that wasn’t true. It only makes reference to playing according to the rules, playing straight.
- The first WSOP event was held in 1970 at Binion’s Horseshoe (now part of Harrahs’ Entertainment, owners of the Rio Hotel and Casino- where the WSOP currently takes place). The winner was Johnny Moss and he received a silver cup as he was elected the first World Champion of Poker.
- Now some numbers to be in awe about:
- More than 70 million decks of cards are sold in the U.S every year.
- The youngest player to win the WSOP main event was 24, the oldest 80.
- Phill Hellmuth has the most bracelets (11), while Doyle Brunson and Johnny Chan have won 10 each.
- The biggest prize to be awarded in a Main Event at the WSOP was in 2006 with a total amount of $12,000,000. Jamie Gold took this home, winning with pocket Qs,9c.
- Total number of possible poker hands in a 52-card deck: 2,598,960.
- Odds of being dealt a pocket pair: 16 to 1. And a Royal Flush? 649,740 to 1.
- The number of 2009 WSOP participants in all combined events: 60,878. And this year? Who knows, I’ll let you know once I do my count!
And because I like videos, here’s one a lot of you would remember. I love their attitudes! I just couldn’t help it! You want to laugh and hug the poor guy at the same time!
Prague Conference
May 11, 2010
Hi Guys and Gals!!
It is May! This is the month that sees Save the Rhino day, Cinco de Mayo, Eat What You Want Day ( May 11th so let’s pig out today!), Memorial Day and who can forget, the iGaming Super Show!
This time around the Conference will take place in Prague. Ah beautiful Prague, (not that I’ve been there before so how would I know?) but who has not seen xXx with Vin Diesel, Blade II or even the Kanye West video “Diamonds from Sierra Leone”? They all have had some part or another shot in Prague. I know and you all know, the city looks beautiful so having the Super Show there will most definitely make one amazing Conference!
Now then moving on to the real nitty gritty of the blog post…
We will be going to the Super Show and we will be having a booth for the Conference. We would love to meet with you if you are attending, so please contact alex@chipleader.com or danielle@chipleader.com and arrange for a meeting.
See you in Prague!!

What is Ante and Blinds.
April 29, 2010
Hi Guys!,
Here I am again bringing you some basic info on this game that we all love: Poker!
Just for beginners
Antes
If a game has an ante, every player contributes a certain, predetermined amount to the pot before each hand. It’s usually a small bet. For instance, in a nickel-dime-quarter game, it might be a nickel. The important thing about antes to remember is that a player’s ante doesn’t count as a bet. It’s just a way of getting a pot started.
Blinds
The other way to start the action rolling is by making players put in a forced bet, called a “blind” before the deal. It’s called a blind because you haven’t seen a card when you put in this bet — you’re going in without seeing, or blind.
The most common practice is to have the two players to the left of the dealer pay the blinds. The player immediately to the dealer’s left places a smaller bet called the “little blind,” whiles the player two places to the left puts in the “big blind.”
The amounts of the blinds are fixed and determined before the game begins. Usually the “big blind” is equal to the smallest bet possible, while the little blind is 1/2 or 1/3 of that amount. So, if the minimum bet was $3, the big blind would place a forced bet of $3 and the little blind might put out $1.
The difference between blinds and antes is that blinds do count as a player’s first bet. This means in the first round of betting, no one can “check,” that is, everyone has to bet.
Stay tune! I’ll be giving up more info and maybe a tip or two

Leading Online Poker Site UltimateBet Finds a New Home at UB.com
UltimateBet rebrands and unveils a sleek new identity with the switch to UB.com, and a shift back to the most important element in online poker, the player.
Miami, FL (Marketwire), Tuesday, November 17, 2009 – Tagged by players as “UB” for much of its decade online, UltimateBet has embraced the Poker Room’s nickname, and is primed to tackle the next ten years with a whole new look and focus. Extensive rebranding of its online Poker Room reveals a multi-layered makeover that delivers the streamlined UB brand name and super cool logo, plus a slew of other ‘non-cosmetic’ feature and functionality changes designed to please the player.
“The launch of UB.com represents a turning point for our company. We have assembled a great group of professionals who are passionate about poker to build the UB brand. Our goal is to create products and services that poker players really want. We are trying to listen very carefully to both our players and the poker community to help us achieve this goal,” said Paul Leggett, Tokwiro’s Chief Operating Officer.
“The launch of UB.com is not just a new domain with a different logo, it’s much more than that. It’s a complete new direction for UB. It’s software built with the serious poker player in mind. It’s a new television show that is truly about poker, not just another reality or game show. And finally, it’s tournaments and promotions that poker players care about.”
The change from UltimateBet to UB is a natural development for the leading online poker site, as it responds to the next generation of poker players who are young, intelligent, and passionate about the game.
The latest software update features a complete Lobby redesign for improved navigation and usability. New game filters empower UB players with a quicker more efficient way to weed out the games they don’t want to see, keeping only their personal game selection in view. Tournament and ring game icons have also been added in this product release.
An overhaul of the tournament schedule adds over 30 new guaranteed poker tournaments and $1 Million-plus in guarantees every month to the line-up. UB’s improved tournament blind structures have been welcomed, and the launch of synchronized breaks is universally applauded amongst the growing breed of multi-table online tournament player.
Recent software enhancements have also introduced a much-anticipated Mac version of the poker client, and players now enjoy more ring game options than ever before, including the unique UB 7-Deuce Hold ‘em, plus 4 Max tables, and ring games with antes.
Home of the Aruba Poker Classic, the annual UBOC online tournament series, coming again this January, and the biggest and best Bad Beat Jackpots, UB.com will continue to offer players industry-leading promotions, the robust RAI$E loyalty program, easy access to superior customer support, and more ways to deposit real money funds with the fastest cashouts around.
“In the ten years since I have been involved with the UB brand, I have never been prouder to represent the company as much as I am right now. We have great people captaining the ship, we have a great vibe and some serious swagger. I look forward to the day when we are the largest poker site on the planet,” added UB Pro player Phil Hellmuth.

We know a lot of our affiliates go crazy for sports. And those who don’t, well, chances are they love a kickass party.
That’s why we’re sending one of our affiliates to the biggest sporting event / football party of the year. That’s right, we’ve brought back our Super Bowl promotion. Yup, we’re giving away another two tickets to the Super Bowl to our top performing affiliate.
The prize package on the line includes airfare for you and a friend to Miami, Florida, hotel accommodations in a really nice hotel, and seats to the biggest game of the year.
To win it, all you need to do is keep raking in new players. If you’re the top affiliate who brings in the highest percentage increase of new depositing players for the month of December compared to your November numbers, you’ll win. There are a few terms and conditions you need to know so head over to our Super Bowl promo page for the details.
Oh, and if you don’t get to hit the Super Bowl on us, don’t worry. We’re throwing another thousand bucks into the mix for the affiliates who rank 2nd through 5th. You can use the cash to throw your own Super Bowl party at home. Maybe put it towards a new HDTV or a few hundred lbs of wings and hold a tailgate party in your own backyard. Your call.
Be Aggressive Oline
September 1, 2009
Online poker is a unique beast, with its own quirks and oddities. How you play a successful and winning game online can be completely different than how you play a successful and winning game in a casino or club. You’re playing against different people in a different environment, and a lot of the tips and guidelines that apply to traditional poker table simply don’t work online.
Case in point, conservative slow playing. This is one of the consistently winning strategies in brick and mortar games. Holding onto your chips is how you win the game, because truly risky gambles are almost always too risky. Now there are exceptions to this, but in general you want to be conservative.
Not so online, especially in fun money games. First of all, the online player base is much more timid than the brick and mortar player base, and thus, they will be more easily aggressed, and aggression will net you more winnings. Realizing the timid nature of many online players will help you win more chips and make more money, whether it’s real or fake.
In fun money games, aggression is always the way to play. There’s no real risk in losing, and thus, there’s no reason not to be aggressive. Fun money games are where you practice your chops, and learn new ways to steal chips. In this environment it always pays off the be aggressive, if only to test whether or not it will be successful.
