UBOC5 Returns with $4 Million in Prize Money, More Events and Bigger Prizes

July 14, 2010

UB’s popular Online Championship features a $1 Million GTD Championship Event, 20 Mini-UBOC events, and additional cash prizes – Satellites and STEP tournaments are available from July 11th.

Miami, FL (Marketwire) Monday, July 12, 2010 – Today, UB unveiled details of the upcoming 2010 UBOC5 schedule, while also launching UBOC satellites to qualify early for all of the lucrative UBOC events running from August 18th through 29th. This year’s follow up UBOC series boasts a super impressive line-up of 20 guaranteed online poker events, including the $1000+50 buy-in $1 million GTD NLH Championship and three new events. Also, the Mini-UBOC schedule will mirror all 20 UBOC events but at a fraction of the buy-ins, and provides the chance for ALL PLAYERS to earn their share of over $4 million in combined tournament guarantees and competition prize money.

Whatever your poker preference or bankroll, UBOC5 has it covered with an exciting calendar of daily events, each one hosted by a Team UB pro player, and offering a mix of popular online poker games including No Limit Texas Hold’em, HORSE, Pot Limit Omaha, 8-Game Mix, 4-MAX, 6-MAX, Heads Up and more.

Highlights of the Summer UBOC series include the $1 million GTD NLH Championship event hosted by the legendary Phil Hellmuth on Sunday, August 29th at 16:00 ET, and the all-new $200+15 buy-in $100K GTD Pro Bounty NLH Turbo event hosted by the entire Team UB on Saturday August 21st at 16:00 ET.

“With the WSOP on hiatus until November, poker players don’t have to look far to get their big series fix,” stated Annie Duke, UB’s Cardroom Consultant. “UBOC 5 is really shaping up to be UB’s best online poker series yet, offering the excitement of a major land-based event no matter what your bankroll is.”

UB’s ‘extra-curricular’ contests will also return. Designed to reward players with added cash prizes, tournament dollars, and freeroll entries, they’re back due to popular demand. Introduced during UBOC4 earlier this year, the Bubble Buster Contest is the ultimate aside to the battle for UBOC domination. Cash in more UBOC events to pocket extra cash, with a staggering $1 million going to any player who can clock up 11 or more cash results throughout the run of UBOC5.

Also, win as many seats as possible for any single UBOC event in the Single Event Satellite Contest to pocket extra prizes in tournament dollars.  In the All-U-Can Satellite Contest, satellite into two or more separate UBOC events to earn entries into exclusive $5K freerolls. Any player who successfully satellites into 17 or more different UBOC events will automatically win a seat into the $1 Million GTD Championship Main Event ($1050 buy-in).  Please see http://www.ub.com/poker-tournaments/uboc/promotions-all-u-can-satellite  for all the details.

For players looking to get in on the action for less, there are 20 events in a parallel series tagged as Mini-UBOC. Each UBOC tournament will be mirrored by a separate Mini-UBOC event where online players can buy in for a fraction of the corresponding UBOC event and compete for an attractive prize pool. UB has even added the all-new Mini-UBOC Championship Monster Stack NLH $50+5 buy-in $50K GTD event running concurrently with the UBOC Championship Main Event on August 29th at 16:00 ET.

The 12-day string of tournaments is touted to attract the best online poker players from across the globe. It’s all about the game and the competition as players vie for the money, the bragging rights and one of a limited edition 2010 UBOC Championship wrist watches, presented to each of the UBOC event Champions, to the Mini-UBOC Main Event Champion, as well as the Mini-UBOC Leaderboard winner.

Players eager to test their UBOC skills now should check the “SATELLITES” tab in the UB tournament lobby for the full UBOC satellite schedule.

Team UB’s Tiffany Michelle will Host the July 11th $10 Buy-in Second Sundays Fundraiser for the Crystal King Benefit Foundation

July 2, 2010

UB and PokerPlayersUnite.org join forces to support Crystal King on her road to recovery, and poker players can help Crystal and her young family with a small outlay of $10.

MIAMI, FL (Marketwire) Thursday, July 1, 2010 — UB.com and PokerPlayersUnite.org is teaming up for a second time in as many months to deliver another amazing ‘Second Sundays’ online fundraiser, this time to support the Crystal King Benefit Foundation (“CKBF”). The July 11th $10 buy-in event at UB.com is scheduled for 14:45 ET, and will be hosted by Amazing Race contestant and Team UB Pro Tiffany Michelle. UB will match 100% of the prize pool, with all proceeds donated to this month’s chosen charity, plus all participants are automatically in the running for $2150 in added prizes.

On May 3rd, just outside of Tallahassee, Florida, Crystal King and her 3 year-old twins, Camrea-Rose and Caden, were involved in a horrific accident with a semi-trailer. Tragically, Caden suffered a major head injury and died on impact. Camrea-Rose escaped with some minor facial bruising and a slight nose fracture, while Crystal incurred extensive injuries, including a fractured pelvis, broken ribs, fractures to both femurs and a shattered right knee.

“There is a lot of money thrown around in poker on a regular basis and it’s causes like this and the ability to help that make what I do for a living worthwhile,” said Team UB pro Tiffany Michelle. “I’ve seen first hand the emotional and financial stress that comes from awful accidents like this one. As a friend or bystander it’s hard not to feel completely helpless. This is such a significant way to lend a hand.”

Crystal King’s story first came to UB’s attention via several mentions of the Florida resident’s traumatic road accident on PokerRoad Radio, and by way of the champion of charity in poker, Rick Blumenthal of PokerPlayersUnite.org renown. UB has been quick to rally to the cause, with the July 11th Second Sundays event set to raise much needed funds for Crystal’s ongoing care, counseling and rehabilitation.

The upcoming CKBF charity poker tournament payouts to the top ten finishers include entry to UB’s weekly Sunday $200+15 buy-in $200,000 Guaranteed tournament. The winner will receive a bonus wireless poker controller. There’s also a bounty on Tiffany’s head, with the player who sends her to the rail picking up a $66 entry to UB’s $7K GTD tourney at 21:30 ET on the same day.

Last month’s Second Sundays event, hosted by Team UB’s Joe Sebok, benefited the National Tay-Sachs & Allied Diseases Association (“NTSAD”). A total of 284 players participated, raising an overall figure of $5690 (includes a $10 direct donation) for this worthwhile charity. BOB5BOB from Massachusetts not only went on to win the Second Sundays event, but he also won the bounty on Joe’s head.

“Fortunately, I was able to hit a few flops and pulled out the win. By knocking out Joe I got an entry into the $7K that night where I came in third place for over $800. So I had a very fun and profitable day, and got to help out National Tay-Sachs & Allied Diseases Association,” said BOB5BOB.

Register now for this month’s Second Sunday event by logging onto UB.com (or AbsolutePoker.com) and look for the tournament name “Second Sundays Charity” in the tournament lobby in the “EVENTS” tab.

Direct donations can also be made online at UB via Player-to-Player transfer to the account “CHARITIES” (first name is “Charity” – a required field for all P2P transfers), a perfect option for those who can’t commit the time at the table, but who still want to show that they have a heart.

UB’s Second Sunday fundraiser tournaments are hosted online across the CEREUS Network on the second Sunday of every month, with each one benefiting a different worthwhile national charity. Players at Absolute Poker are also invited to participate and support these events.

UB and Absolute Poker’s Craziest Last Longer Bet is Sending Four Lucky Players to the WSOP*

June 22, 2010

The wildest last longer prop bets will see MANIMACK and PROOF1459 play off against their poker rivals in Las Vegas during the World Series of Poker*, and the losers face some pretty embarrassing tasks ahead to settle the score.

Miami, FL (Marketwire), Monday, June 21, 2010 – UB and Absolute Poker cast the net last month to catch The Craziest Last Longer Bet, with the caveat that only the sickest last longer bets would be in contention to walk away with one of two VIP prize packages for the World Series of Poker* (“WSOP*”) this July. Now the votes are in, with UB’s MANIMACK/JUSTIN74 and Absolute Poker’s PROOF1459/SHORTSTCK all on their way to Las Vegas to play out their outrageous prop bets in Event # 54 of the WSOP*.

At UB, the 31 year-old MANIMACK (Gregg Mardirosian) issued the ultimate challenge to his buddy JUSTIN74 (Justin Leichter), a 32 year-old entrepreneur and poker player, whose grandmother taught him to play poker with pennies at the age of 4. The player who busts out earliest in WSOP* Event #54 faces the daunting task of having his losing hand and the UB logo tattooed on his body, and then having to meet and marry a girl in Vegas before being allowed to return home to Florida.

“Thanks for choosing our craziest last longer bet, and thanks to UB for putting the money into my account. I’m excited about flying out to Vegas. I’m excited about the tournament, and I’m really excited about Justin getting married,” said MANIMACK. “I’m a little concerned. Justin stays in practice, and I haven’t been playing poker much lately, but the last few days I’ve been on UB trying to shake the rust off, and I’ve been cashing, so see y’all in Vegas.”

Over at Absolute Poker, PROOF1459 (Michael Arnese) and SHORSTCK (Tom Lipko) have been longstanding poker rivals, and they were both itching to put their No Limit Hold ‘em skills to the test on poker’s biggest stage. Whoever of the two buddies from Carbondale, Pennsylvania gets sent packing to the rails first will be forced to walk home all the way from Las Vegas in under a week. If the loser can’t complete the walk within deadline, they have to pay the cost of the $1,000 entry to the winner of the bet.

The four poker adventure-seekers earned the most votes when their prop bets were put to the test with UB and Absolute Poker’s online poker community. Their gutsy, creative efforts will see them get shipped to Sin City to play out their bet in Event # 54 of WSOP*, a $1,000 buy-in No Limit Hold ‘em event that kicks off at the Rio on July 1, 2010. The VIP Vegas package includes return airfares, hotel stay, Event # 54 tournament entry for two, plus the chance to hang with the cool crowd – Team UB and Absolute Poker pro players during their Vegas jaunt.

WSOP is here! OK not the main event yet but it’s a coming!

June 17, 2010

Hi Everyone!

All you hear about now is WSOP this and that, WSOP packages given out left right and centre and all things to do with WSOP.

It’s all nice and interesting but I wanted to share some little known facts and some general facts about WSOP and Poker. Here they are:

Fact #1: A fifth suit was added in 1937. As you can tell this did not catch on. It was mostly because people would have to buy new decks. This fifth suit was called: Eagle, Green Suit or Royal in England. It was green in colour

Fact #2: Thanks to French influence the suits have actual connotations to classes of people. The Diamond is said to symbolize merchants, the Spade Royalty, the Club symbolizes peasants and the Heart the clergy.

Fact #3: The Main Even in the WSOP has been a $10,000 buy-in no limit Texas Hold’Em tournament since 1972.

Fact #4: The WSOP was first televised in 1973.

Fact #5: The WSOP was founded in 1970. Benny Binion invited 6 of the best poker players to the Horseshoe Casino in Las Vegas.

Fact #6: Doyle Brunson won the Main Even consecutively in 1976 and 1977 with the same hand! That hand is the 10-2

Fact #7: Tod Brunson won a bracelet at the 2005 WSOP. This made him and Doyle the first father-son combination to win Series Bracelets.

Fact #8: In 1973 Benny Binion speculated that one day the WSOP would have 50 participants!

Fact #9: There are 2,598,960 possible poker hands with 52 cards.

Fact #10: Each of the kings in a deck of cards represents a great kind in history: Spades: King David, Hearts: Charlemagne, Clubs: Alexander the Great and Diamonds Julius Caesar

Mixed Martial Arts and Poker

June 14, 2010

Does that title sound a little off? Am I gonna talk gibberish? Oh no, I’m not. UB has proven itself ahead of all and has, once again, amazed us. The launch of a new minisite, that I’m pretty sure all you, poker players, will appreciate as it will not only entertain but teach you, as well.

So, MMA and poker? Once again, yes! The WSOP 2010 is just around the corner and all poker players are preparing themselves to win big and become legends. The same as with past event Bellator for the MMA fighters had to prepare themselves, both mentally and physically (we can leave the physical preparation aside for the poker players :P ). No, seriously, we are talking about having focus, training, practicing, learning and executing in order to reign victorious.  Every player has to apply discipline, endurance, quick-thinking, emotional control, deception, aggression, the same as a fighter prepares their battle strategies to out-perform and out-last their adversaries.

Everyone knows patience is a must when it comes to poker, but add to it the patience and perspicacity you need to have so you learn to read your competitors, to foresee a move, a kick, a bluff, a hit.

But I don’t want to give it all away. I’m inviting you to find out for yourselves, you don’t want to miss our biggest master sharing his secrets, the same as Mr. Miyagi would have done.

Wax on…wax off, Daniel-san!

What is ROI ?

June 10, 2010

ROI Stands for ‘Return on Investment’ and is a commonly used way of calculating your profits in poker. The exact method of calculating ROI will vary depending on which form of the game is played. A more useful figure for poker players may be ‘hourly rate’ which takes into account the time spent playing.

1) Calculating Poker ROI for Tournaments / Sit and Goes

ROI for tournaments is expressed as a percentage of your original buy-in. It is standard in poker to remove 100% (buy-in) from the calculation at the end. For example:

You play 100 tournaments each with a buy in of $10 + $1 fee and end up with a total bankroll of $1600.

ROI = (1600)/(1100) or 145% – remove the 100% (standard format) and you have a ROI of 45% for those tournaments.

2) Calculating ROI for Cash Games

ROI for cash games becomes a little more difficult. This is because you need a time frame over which to calculate your return. The standard poker format for this is to use 100 hands. For example.

You play 1000 hands of poker over a single session and make $500 profit. Your buy-in for the game  start was $200. ROI is thus 50% per 100 hands. It is also common in poker cash games to calculate profit as the number of big blinds won per 100 hands. In this example with blinds at $2/$1 you could note your profits as 25 Big Blinds per 100 hands.

3) Hourly Rates – A More Useful Number?

ROI in both of the above examples does not factor in the time you spent playing the game. To get a truly useful number you need to divide your total profit by the time at the tables. This figure can then be used to compare different formats of the game, buy-in levels or different poker sites to see which is the most profitable.

Stay tune! I’ll be giving up more info J

What is Omaha and No Limit

May 25, 2010

Just for beginners

Omaha

Omaha hands are played out in a similar fashion as those in Texas Holdem. However, instead of two down cards, four are dealt, followed by a betting round. A three card flop follows, with another betting round. Next comes an one card turn card, with a another betting round. Finally a fifth river card, and a final round of betting.

At the showdown, five card hands are created by using exactly two cards from a player’s hand, and exactly three cards from the board cards. All four of a player’s cards must be shown to qualify for winning a pot. If you only show two cards and discard the other two, your hand is dead and you forfeit claim to the pot.

The basic rules of Texas Hold’em apply, except the “use two cards from your hand” requirement means a player cannot “play the board” like in Texas Holdem. Regardless of what is on the board, without exception players must use three cards from the board and two from their hand. Even if there are five spades on the board, you must have two spades in your hand to have a flush

No Limit
No Limit Texas Hold’em is the game that determines the World Championship of Poker every year. It is the form of poker most commonly seen on televised tournaments. In No Limit, there are very few betting restrictions that a player must follow. You must bet the minimum of the big blind and when raising, you must at least double the amount of the bet (or raise) of the previous better. Other than those two restrictions, you can bet any or all your chips at any time.
